UWCSEA Foundation Update, 31 July 2017
Share |

Collectively support from our community has increased scholarship opportunities, investment in teaching and learning and enhanced support for sustainable development to the tune of SG$6.5 million this year, to date.

This is a combination of modest gifts combining together to make a big difference and a number of larger gifts. This year we received two individuals gifts worth over $1 million each. The first will support the Impact study with Harvard, fund two IB scholarships and create a teaching and learning endowment. The second is an endowed gift that will fund UWC scholarship opportunities for young people of refugee status for many years to come.

Finally, in November UWCSEA will be hosting the first ever Foundation Week, culminating in a special Impact of Giving Gala. It will be an opportunity to showcase the wide range of activities that all gifts - big and small combined - have made possible. We look forward to sharing more information about this in the coming weeks.

Thank you once again for your continued support.

Director of Advancement

Impact of Giving: Scholarship Programme

In May this year, 42 members of our scholar community graduated from UWCSEA. Most will now go on to university with further scholarships, while some will return home to complete national service or put their UWC values into immediate action through a donor-funded Gap Year experience.

We look forward to welcoming new members to our scholar family in August 2017 including scholars from Peru, Uganda, Vietnam, Burkina Faso, Israel, Myanmar and Fiji.

We are also delighted to announce that two refugee scholarship opportunities have been made possible by the UWCSEA community. The first has been funded through collective gifts to the
UWCSEA Kay Everett Refugee Initiative, which was set up in honour of a former student and humanitarian lawyer who sadly passed away in 2016. A female scholar from Syria will attend UWC Atlantic College in August 2017.

The second refugee scholarship is part of a generous endowment gift that will fund a series of scholarships and benefit many deserving individuals in the future.

Impact of Giving: Teaching and Learning

This year saw the opening of the donor funded IDEAS Hub on Dover Campus. It has already established itself as a haven for creativity and entrepreneurship and has hosted numerous talks, workshops and events over the past few months.

Gifts have also funded a partnership between Harvard University and UWC to carry out a longitudinal study on the impact of a UWC education. An initial study, carried out last year revealed that UWC does create ethical individuals. The next stage of this pioneering research partnership could potentially change the face of educations as findings inspire others schools to adopt elements of our programme.

Looking ahead, a generous gift to create a Teaching and Learning Endowment will enhance the educational experience for all students. Gifts to the Annual Fund will also support continued investment in staff professional development and enrichment of the Personal, Social and Emotional programmes at the school, as well as advance the UWCSEA Curriculum Articulation project

Impact of Giving: Environmental Sustainability

Earlier this month students, parents, staff and alumni came together to install 100 solar panels on the Dover Campus as part of the Solar for Dover initiative. It was a fantastic achievement that will help reduce the College's carbon emissions. We are currently working to launch a similar programme on the East Campus and look forward to sharing more on this in 2017/2018.

The Rainforest Nurseries, composting programmes, edible gardens and numerous environmental programmes continue to be very popular with students and as we look to the future, a new donor created Sustainability Fund will enhance biodiversity and biomimicry awareness.

Discussions are also already taking place regarding further environmental initiatives that will benefit the whole community in 2017/2018.

Foundation Week and Gala - November 2017

Foundation week: 6 -10 November

Foundation week will showcase the impact that giving to UWCSEA, through UWCSEA Foundation has on the teaching and learning experience at the College. From interactive sessions, workshops and speaker events to immersive experiences across both campuses, parents, staff and students will have the opportunity to learn more about the work of the Foundation and how 'giving' supports the UWC mission.

We are always looking for volunteers
to help raise awareness of giving to UWCSEA. If you are located in Singapore and you would like to be part of Foundation Week, please contact the Alumni Team for more information.

Alumni are a vital part of our community and we would welcome your support, advice and involvement.

Impact of Giving Gala: 11 November

The inaugural Impact of Giving Gala will raise funds and awareness for the remarkable programmes that enhance the UWCSEA experience and support the ambitious mission of the UWC Movement.

This black tie Gala Dinner will be an evening of fun and fundraising, and we would be delighted if alumni would attend. We are also looking for auction items for the gala and would appreciate any support or contacts - please contact us.
