TIM JARVIS '84

Environmental scientist, polar explorer, author and public speaker
Record holding polar explorer, award-winning environmental scientist, author and public speaker

Tim Jarvis is an environmental scientist, author, adventurer and public speaker with Master’s degrees in environmental science and environmental law. He is committed to finding pragmatic solutions to environmental issues that he is passionate about, including climate change mitigation and adaptation, and unsustainable land use. He is involved with several multilateral aid projects as a sustainability adviser.

Tim holds the world record for the fastest unsupported journey to the South Pole and the longest unsupported journey in Antarctica. He is the author of three books - bestseller The Unforgiving MinuteMawson: Life and Death in Antarctica; and Shackleton’s Epic, Recreating the World’s Greatest Journey of Survival.  His recreation of Sir Douglas Mawson’s ill-fated expedition of 1913 was made into an award winning documentary film.  His expedition in February 2013, successfully leading a team to retrace Sir Ernest Shackleton’s epic and gruelling journey of 100 years before, has also been documented in film.

Tim was made a Fellow of the Yale World Fellows programme in 2009 for environmental and expedition leadership and a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010 for services to environment, community and exploration.  In 2013 he was named the Australian Geographic Society’s Adventurer of the Year and in November 2014, Tim was announced WWF-Australia Global Ambassador.

A former Ambassador of international child welfare group PLAN’s Corporate Challenge Program and National Ambassador for the Leukaemia Foundation, Australia, Tim currently devotes his volunteer time to his roles as Global Ambassador for WWF, member of Fauna and Flora International's (FFI) Conservation Circle and patron of Nature Play, Australia. He works as environmental advisor to the engineering company, Arup.

Invited to speak to students at UWCSEA, Tim has kindly and readily come back several times in the recent past to share his stories and expertise on environmental sustainability, leadership, personal endurance and adventure, to hundreds of students.
