KIRSTEN SCOTT '01

Neurology registrar (resident)
Co-founder of Project Zimbabwe
Trustee and founding member of Zimbabwe Health Training Support (ZHTS)

Kirsten completed her medical degree at King’s College London in 2009 after attending UWCSEA as a National Committee Scholar from Zimbabwe. While at university she became a trustee and founding member of Zimbabwe Health Training Support (ZHTS), a UK-based group of diaspora health professionals committed to supporting health care provision and training in Zimbabwe.

Affiliated with ZHTS is ‘Project Zimbabwe’, founded in 2007 by Kirsten and a group of fellow students at King’s College that aims to establish links with students from all health care disciplines in Zimbabwe and to encourage and facilitate collaboration in learning and research between students in Zimbabwe and the UK. In the first two years, with the support of Virgin Airways, the project sent almost 1,000 textbooks to university libraries in Bulawayo and Harare and set up a buddy system between medical students from the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo and those from King’s College. ZHTS is now supporting a number of community based mental health projects in Zimbabwe as well as supporting nurse training in mental health in collaboration with UK based diaspora health professionals.

To support the TB programme at Murabinda Hospital in the Buhera district outside of Harare, which cares for HIV patients and those with TB, while still a student at university, Kirsten raised funds by organising film evenings and concerts and running a marathon.

Kirsten returned to UWCSEA to speak at Graduation 2010 and pass on to the graduating group, the life lessons that she lives by. She is currently working as a neurologist in the United Kingdom, completing a PhD in clinical neuroscience and along with her husband, is raising their two young sons.
