AKIHIKO HOSHIDE '87

Astronaut with Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Two visits to the International Space Station and three space walks

Akihiko Hoshide is an Astronaut with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

After graduating from UWCSEA in 1987, Aki received a Bachelor's Degree in mechanical engineering from Keio University and a Master of Science Degree in aerospace engineering from the University Of Houston Cullen College Of Engineering. In 1992 he joined the National Space Development Agency of Japan (NASDA), currently Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).

In May 2008, Aki flew to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the Space Shuttle "Discovery" as a Mission Specialist for the second of three Kibo assembly-related missions, which delivered the Japanese Experiment Module "Kibo" to the ISS.

In July 2012 he made his second trip to the International Space Station (ISS) where he stayed for more than four months, during which time he carried out physical and environmental research and Earth observation, and performed three space walks to repair faulty equipment.

During his second stay at the ISS, Aki also arranged for a live video link to UWCSEA and gave hundreds of UWCSEA students a live tour of the Station and answered their questions.

In July 2014 Aki served as Commander of the 18th NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) expedition. He spent nine days living and conducting research 62 feet below the surface of the ocean in Florida International University’s Aquarius Reef Base undersea research habitat.

In May of 2016, Aki came back to UWCSEA and presented to more than 3,000 students, staff and members of the UWCSEA community.

*With thanks to JAXA
